Civil War Colt 1849 Pocket Pistol 1862 Inscribed By CW Soldier

Serial #210850, .31 Caliber black powder percussion,  6 inch octagon barrel with a very fine dark bore with strong rifling.  This is a Colt model 1849 Pocket Pistol manufactured in 1862 and is hand engraved on the butt of the grip strap “C.O. Rockwell”.  The civil war manufactured gun was likely owned by Camden O. Rockwell who enlisted on 8/26/1862 as a Private into the Ohio 9th Light Artillery, promoted to Corporal on 8/1/1863 and mustered out on 6/16/1865.  Records indicate only one soldier with name corresponding to the ones on the revolver.  In very good to fine condition the barrel and frame are mostly gray with trace amounts of blue in protected areas with the loading lever retaining much of the original finish.  The cylinder shows trace amounts of the original scroll engraved scene with the numbers clearly visible and partial amounts of the writing.  The barrel is well marked with the one line name and address and the frame clearly shows “Colts / Patent” marking.  The grip frame has a very pleasing goldenrod patina on the brass and the wood grips are solid with most of a later added finish remaining having several old scratches and contusions.  Mechanically sound it holds at half and full cock with proper indexing and a nice crisp trigger pull.  A great example of a Civil War production Colt with very possible ties to a specific soldier well worth further research.  Antique
