Excellent Mid 1880's First Type Box 40-60 Winchester Ammo Full & Original
This is a full box, 20 original rounds, of .40-60 Winchester Central Fire ammunition manufactured by Winchester circa mid 1880's for use in the Model 1876 Centennial Rifle and the Model 1885 with 210 grain bullets. This early box shows the unheadstamped cartridge cut with the early “Central Fire” designation. The labels are fully intact with bright colors and crisp graphics having only very minor edge wear. The two piece box is excellent and in original condition with slight seam separation on the bottom left side corner and top rear edge with some very minor edge wear and writing on the back. The cartridges appear native to the box, and as Giles points out on P80 of his excellent book One Hundred Years of Winchester Cartridge Boxes, 1856-1956 it is not uncommon to see original head stamped cartridges in a box with unheadstamped label. A excellent example of a hard to find box in a very desirable caliber.
