Pre-War German Model 1888 Type Sporting Rifle by Haenel
NSN, 8 x 56mm Mannlicher-Schoenauer, 23 1/2" solid rib barrel with an excellent, bright bore. This is a very handsome and well-made rifle, built in a traditional German configuration. The barrel has a full-length matted rib with sporting bead front sight and two-leaf rear sight, with "C.G. HAENEL, SUHL, GERMANY" maker’s marking inset into the rib just ahead of the receiver. The barrel retains 97-98% of a professionally applied added blue finish that has left the edges and markings still sharp and clear. The finish carries over onto the receiver, which still has a well-defined original stipple finish across the surface metal. The butter knife bolt and magazine housing have a machine-turned, in-the-white finish with some scattered traces of mild freckling present, mostly along the edges. The wedge-fastened walnut stock has a schnabel tipped forend, raised side panels, finely checkered rounded pistol-grip, and a continental shadow-line cheek-piece on the left side of the buttstock. A single en bloc clip is included with the rifle. This is a very handsome rifle, built along very Germanic lines, and is in fine condition overall. FFL or C&R
