Very Nice Pair of Highly Embellished Balkan or Turkish Flintlock Pistols with London Markings
NSN, .62 Caliber, 13" part octagon barrels with good, lightly pitted bores. These are very well-made, and attractive pistols that have interesting barrels that feature wide, wedding band style transitions with engraved ivy leaf border motif, and unusual narrow raised ribs that end at the copper front sight beads. The barrel breeches are marked with spurious proofs and simulated English maker’s name, but the word "LONDON" is correctly written on both pistols. The locks may have been taken from a different matched pair of pistols and feature elegant swan-necked cocks and decorative fences at the pans. More ersatz English, composed of mostly correct letters, is present on the plates. The carved walnut stocks feature nicely embellished fittings: finely engraved trigger guards; pierced foliate sideplates; shield-shaped wrist escutcheons; and false ramrod thimbles (the pistols are not equipped with ramrods, and have no provision for storage). The pistols are further equipped with bulbous nickel silver buttcaps, possibly taken from a different pair of pistols, with delicately engraved straps along the sides. Both locks are fully functional and the pistols can be fired, although it is not recommended to do so. These are extremely nice decorative pistols, both well-made and of very high quality. They would make splendid decorative accents for a study or gun room. Antique
