Whitney 1812 Contract Flintlock Musket with US Model 1816 Bayonet
NSN, .69 Caliber, 42" barrel with a very good, lightly pitted bore. This is a Type III contract musket that was purchased out of an old New Hampshire farmhouse that still belongs to an old established colonial era family. The metal has even ruddy-brown surface oxidation on all of the iron components, including the barrel, "N. HAVEN" marked lock, barrel bands, trigger guard, ramrod, and buttplate, with the exception being an area of fairly bright, armory gray at the muzzle where the metal was protected by the bayonet over time. The "P" proof is still clear and crisp on the barrel breech, and the lock plate marking is likewise clear and fully legible. The brass pan has tarnished to a dark ochre patina over time that closely matches the color of the iron components as well. The walnut stock has never been sanded, and retains most of the original military oil finish with crisp "V / JN" inspector initials on the left side (US Inspector John Newbury). There are some small handling marks and minor blemishes scattered about the wood, including some minor scratches on the left side of the wrist, some minor discoloration on the butt, and a small 20th century applied social security or inventory serial number on the underside just ahead of the trigger guard. A short gouge is also present in the wood on the right side of the buttstock which we were told by the family that the original owner said this had stopped a bayonet charge. The musket is accompanied by a later US Model 1816 socket bayonet that measures 19 1/8" overall, with a 16 1/2" angular blade having hollow-ground back flutes and a shallow fuller with faintly visible "US" just ahead of the shank. The socket itself measures 3" in length and has a T-shaped mortise. The metal has a mottled brown patina that matches the musket closely, except for some streaked gray metal within the socket itself. This is a very handsome War of 1812 era US contract musket that supposedly hung on the wall of the families house since it returned from the war with their ancestor. Antique
