Scarce First Model Smith & Wesson “Model of 91” Target Pistol Antique 6" Barrel
Serial #15454, 22 LR, 6 inch round ribbed barrel with a bright, excellent bore. This is the Model of 1891 (marked as “Model of 91” on the rib) first model manufactured circa mid 1890's. This late 1st model exhibits all of the first model features including the revolver recoil shield, two pins above the trigger guard, cylinder stop and hand cut. Interestingly the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson by Supica and Nahas lists a slightly earlier serial number (15248) as the earliest know without the recoil shield making this possibly among the last of the “true” first issues. The barrel is correctly numbered to the frame. In excellent condition the single shot target pistol retains about 85-90% of the original high polish blue finish toning to gray along the barrel sides, around the muzzle and along the high edges. The hammer shows generous amounts of case color with just trace amounts on the trigger-guard. The oversize walnut gold S&W medallion grips rate excellent with crisp checkering. It is sighted with the Paine Target blade front and notch rear sights. Mechanically sound with a smooth hammer and crisp, light trigger pull having a very slight bit of movement in the barrel lock up. A high condition and well marked late First Model with the scarce 6 inch barrel. Antique
