US Commerical .58 Caliber Tompion

A commercially designed and sold rifle and musket tompion, used by Federal troops during the civil war. A central, non adjustable wooden body, around the center of which is wrapped a cork washer. The washer, now worn, was probably tapered to fit tightly.
