Civil War Colt Model 1862 Police Presented to Cpt. J.T. Prince Jr. Co. D, 24th Mass Infantry

Serial #6689, .36 Caliber, 6 1/2" barrel with an excellent, bright bore.  This is a splendid, all-matching, early production revolver that retains 60-65% of the original bright blue that has flaked and faded to a mellow plum-brown patina on the balance.  Some traces of original blue are present on the cylinder flutes, with the balance of the cylinder having a dark gray-brown color.  The frame has muted, but still visible color case-hardening, with some traces of mild surface freckling throughout, as well as further color case-hardening present on the protected areas of the loading lever.  The trigger guard and backstrap retain a commensurate amount of the original silver finish that has tarnished to a matte black color over time.  The walnut grip is likewise in fine shape with only some minor handling marks and blemishes scattered about the original varnish.  The action is tight and the revolver does not rattle at all.  An ornate presentation is engraved along the backstrap: "J.G.W. to J.T.P. Jr. Co. D, 24th Regt. Mass. Vol." and "N.E.G." on the butt in Gothic capitals, (the 24th MA infantry was also known as the "New England Guards.")  John T. Price Jr. was a 26 year old merchant and resident of Boston when he enlisted in 24th MA Volunteer Infantry Regiment on September 2, 1861.  He was commissioned a Captain in D Co. on December 6, and served with the regiment until he resigned his commission on January 18, 1863.  This is a splendid Colt Model 1862 Police with a Civil War presentation to an identified Massachusetts infantry officer.  It would make a stellar addition to any collection.  Antique
