Scarce South African Enfield No. 4 Mk. 1 Rifle by Savage 303 British

Serial #5C567, .303 British, 25" barrel with a fine, bright bore that has some mild freckling within the grooves. This is a 1942-dated, "US PROPERTY"-marked rifle that has traces of original blue remaining on the receiver and barrel, as well as large areas of a lightly flaked Suncorite finish on the front sight protectors barrel bands, rear sight, and matching numbered magazine (armory renumbered to match). The matching numbered bolt exhibits some further finish loss on the bearing surfaces, and the handle has worn to dark gray underlying metal. The early button-type cocking-piece has a mixed blue and Suncorite finish remaining. The receiver has a small import stamp on the left side, as well as a large "U (Broad Arrow)" Union of South Africa property stamp on the top of the receiver ring. Additionally, an "S"-marked Mk. 1 adjustable rear sight is fitted. The walnut buttstock, matching numbered forend, and handguards are in about good-very good condition with numerous small handling marks scattered about the added slightly glossy varnish finish. This is a very good example of a very early production Savage – Stevens No. 4, with rare South African property markings, and would make a terrific addition to any collection. FFL or C&R
