Custom Model 87 Ithaca Deerslayer Built for Louis P. Smith's Grandson 12 Ga Rifled Barrel
Serial #MAG-870030991, 12 Gauge (2 ¾” & 3” Chamber), 22 inch rifled barrel with a bright, excellent bore. This is a documented custom shop Ithaca Deerslayer model 87 shotgun manufactured by Ithaca in the King Ferry, NY facility for a former Ithaca Gun Company President's Grandson Sheldon L. Smith. His grandfather was Louis P. Smith the beloved former Ithaca Gun Company president know as “Everybody's Friend” who according to Snyder's book The Ithaca Gun Company From the Beginning worked at the plant starting when he was 18 years old in 1889 holding many different positions including president for 10 years and was Chairman when he died in 1957. Accompanying the gun is a letter signed by Sheldon L. Smith in March of 2024 which attests to the Shotgun provenance. The letter somewhat incorrectly identifies the gun as a model 37 which was the original name prior to the renaming of the model in 1987 when Ithaca Acquisition Corp reintroduced the model and this was from that later time frame. In excellent condition the classic pump action features a plain receiver and select, nicely figured walnut. The metal surfaces retain virtually all, 98-99% original blue finish with very minor handling marks. The stock and forearm are likewise excellent with custom ordered smooth finish without checkering. It has the original factory rear and Raybar front sight and is sighted with a M8-4X Leupold scope. A beautiful Custom built Ithaca Model 87 rifled slug shotgun with direct ties to a very important figure in the History of the Ithaca Gun Company. FFL
