Remington No. 5 Short Export Mexico M1897/99 Bayonet and Scabbard
Knife bayonet for use on the Remington No. 5 rolling block rifle. Most No. 5 knife bayonets were made for export, with a hooked lower crosspiece. The short export bayonet is most often associated with Mexico's purchase of 14,712 rolling block rifles and carbines in 1899–1900. 7,702 of these were rifles, carbines did not accept a bayonet. Remington produced the No. 5 bayonet in two additional blade lengths: 13.187 in. for Mexico and 16.00 in. for France. This examples was made for Mexico and measure 8 3/8" blade, 12 3/4" over all. This example is not marked on the guard and has a very good condition, speckled blade, as is the guard and pommel. Fuller on this bayonet is marked "Remington Arms Co. Ilion, NY". The handle has "677" stamped in the left scale. The scabbard has a steel body and integral leather belt hanger both are in good+ condition with almost none of the finish on the steel body and pliable leather. This bayonet fits several rolling block models with a .590" muzzle size.
