Beautiful Mid-18th Century Silver-Mounted Pistols by Honoré Maye of Marseilles
NSN, .65 Caliber, 8 1/2" sculpted barrels with good, lightly pitted bores. This is a very handsome pair of pistols made by Honoré Maye of Marseilles, France (active ca. 1750). The pistols feature relief cast barrels with martial panoplies at the breeches, and sunburst surrounds at the now vacant front sight cavities. Both locks are clearly marked "Hré / Maye / Marseilles" and have swan-necked cocks with unusually-shaped pans, and extensive, intricate silver wire inlay within the walnut stocks. The metal has an overall bright gray patina throughout, with some minor spots of freckling on the barrel and functional locks. One of the pistols was evidently used more than the other and exhibits noticeably more wear with a replaced, non-matching engraved silver trigger guard that has old repairs to the wood at the front, as well as minor repairs to the straps on either side of the relief cast buttcap. Both pistols have wooden ramrods, and are in very good-near fine condition. These are marvelously embellished pistols, made just prior to the French and Indian War, and would make a wonderful addition to any collection. Antique
