British Martini-Henry Mk. III Rifle by Enfield with Bayonet and Scabbard
NSN, .577/.450 Martini, 33" barrel with an excellent, bright bore. This rifle has an 1879-dated, Enfield-marked frame, with the metal retaining 97-98% of the original bright blue finish. There are some traces of silvering at the muzzle, a couple of very small areas of fine freckling on the frame, and some further mild fading on the high and projecting edges. The receiver has crisp markings on the right side: "(crown) / V.R. / ENFIELD / 1879 / (crown/arrow) / III / 1." (the "1" at the bottom denotes a 1st class weapon). Original color case-hardening is still present on the lever, especially on the protected side. The walnut buttstock and forend have a few minor handling marks and blemishes in the otherwise excellent original military oil finish and the original cartouche is crisp and clear on the right side of the butt. A correct iron ramrod is included. Also present is a correct Pattern 1876 Long Bayonet that measures 25" long overall, and has a 21 1/2" angular blade with single fuller and hollow-ground back flutes. The blade retains the original arsenal bright finish, while the shank and socket retain 90-92% of the original blue finish. The bayonet is housed in a correct leather scabbard whose brass throat and chape have been nicely cleaned to bright yellow. The leather body has flaked along its length, but is still fully serviceable, although the seam has split for a few inches below the throat fitting. This is a really handsome Martini-Henry in the classic .450 caliber, with a great accessory, and is in excellent condition. Antique
