Although the 1841 edition of the U.S. Ordnance Manual provides ample information on the equipment that was in use during the 1840s, it is evident that the patterns of equipment that it describes were not introduced until 1838 or 1839. This guide is intended to fill this gap in our knowledge by providing an overview of what were issued to the regular infantryman, rifleman, and dragoon, in the 1830s, with excursions into earlier and later years.
