Massachusetts Marked US Model 1842 Percussion Pistol H. Aston & Co. 1852 “MS”

This is a Henry Aston & Co. Model 1842 percussion .54 caliber pistol with an 8.5 inch barrel has an oxidized bore with spots of roughness manufactured in 1852.  It is marked on the lock plate “US / H. ASTON & CO.” and “MIDDtn / CONN / 1852” behind the hammer.  This was part of production run from 1851-1852 of approximately 6000 total pieces and is Massachusetts “M.S.” marked above the standard inspector and proof marks.  In very fine to near excellent antique condition the well marked pistol has aged to a very even brown on the hammer and lock plate with crisp clear markings.  The barrel has a mostly bright finish with areas of pitting toward the action and scattered carbon staining and is marked “M.S.” in a slightly larger font above the standard “US / SM / P” proof and inspector marks with “1852” opposite the hammer and “JH” on the flat near the stock.   The brass furniture has a bright appearance with visible “N” and “H” inspection marks.  The pivoting ramrod has a slight bend but functions properly and is mostly plum-brown.  The stock has several repaired and now stable cracks with the inspector cartouche just visible above the trigger.  The action holds at half and full cock with a strong spring.  A very fine / near excellent example of a Massachusetts marked Aston pistol that may have seen use in the Civil War.  Antique
