Massive English 8 Bore Double Barrel Percussion Hammer Shotgun Warrell Portsmouth

Serial #NSN, 8 Bore black powder, 31 1 / 4 inch Damascus barrels with very good plus bores with very slight, isolated roughness.  This Birmingham proofed double is marked “S. WARRELL PORTSMOUTH” on the solid rib with both sides of the frame “WARRELL PORTSMOUTH” and was manufactured between 1855 and 1868.  The barrels are in very good condition, mostly pewter-gray to plum brown with very little of the original Damascus pattern visible having one dent about 9 inches from the muzzle on the underside.  The original, checkered straight grip walnut stock rates about excellent with some small contusions, scratches, scrapes and dings expected of a used gun from this era.  The straight grip has an original checkered palm rest and also a blank silver square name plate on top of the wrist.  The metal is slightly proud to the wood at most points of contact.  The foliate engraved metal frame and hammers are mostly in the gray and show some toning to brown with slight carbon staining overall.  The double triggers hold at half and full cock.  It comes with the original brass tipped ramrod which is well fitted to the underside of the barrels.  An impressive 8 Bore shotgun that would add to any shotgun collection and certainly look great on display.  Antique
