Rare Chilean Contract M1941 Johnson Semi-Automatic Rifle Bayonet with Scabbard
This is a very rare bayonet that measures 11 3/4" overall with a 7 1/2" straight, angular blade with deep, hollow-ground back flutes. The metal exhibits characteristic rough machining, and retains 95-97% of the original blue-black phosphate finish, with some mild fading along the edges, at the tip, and on the muzzle-ring. The bayonet is housed in a correct, very well-made, original russet leather scabbard that has light scuffs throughout and a Chilean marking ("EC 942 AMT") stamped onto the underside of the rigid belt loop protector. Not long after the Netherlands Purchasing Commission placed an order for the Johnson Rifle to arm their colonial troops in the Dutch East Indies, the government of Chile ordered 1,000 rifles for use by mounted troops, but chambered in 7mm Mauser rather than .30-06 (even though, confusingly, the barrel lock bushings still retained the original ".30-06" markings). The Chilean bayonets were issued with a locally produced scabbard, of much higher quality and design than those offered by Johnson Automatics, and this very desirable example is still in fine-near excellent condition.
