Scarce F. Draper & Co. Civil War Patent Date Percussion 12 Gauge Brass Shotshells

This is a F. Draper & Co. patented shotgun shell that had a unique knurled rim which unscrews to allow for reloading with a percussion cap.  They were patented by William H. Wills of Boston, MA and produced by F. Draper & Company of East Cambridge, Connecticut.  The flat brass base is marked “F. D. & Co.” / “Patented Nov 29 1864”.  In very good to near excellent condition the 12 gauge  brass shell measures just under 2 ½ inches with a pleasant aged patina.  The rim shows some tool marks and does not unscrew under normal force.  Included is a second brass cartridge that is missing the base but clearly shows the inner workings and will make an excellent companion piece to show how the cartridge functioned.   Examples of a Civil War Patented brass shotgun shells that will add to any cartridge collection and would be great to display with an antique shotgun.
