Scarce WWI M1910 Mounted Cavalry Canteen Dated 1918 Unit Mark
The design used the standard M1910 canteen water bottle, and paired it with a different style carrier. Instead of having belt clips on the back, the carrier has a leather strap that goes around the outside of the canteen, with a steel spring clip on top. 5 canvas retaining loops hold the strap to the canteen, and it would be attached to whatever part of the horse's tack that the soldier desired. This 1910 canteen is in Very good+ condition, and looks to have seen moderate use during its service life. The canteen is fully non magnetic, made totally of aluminum, brass chain for the top. This is an early example with no manufactures mark but has unit marks on the cap, "F.R.S. 63 313" which still retains the original cork seal. The carrier is in very good condition and is maker marked "LONG 03-18" on the underside of the left side flap and "T.M. Swis... 131" on the right. The interior felt lining is retained very well, with no insect damage. The snaps still have a blacked brass finish, and the outer shell shows light wear and age soiling. The leather strap is also in very good condition with light cracking with light verdigris on hardware, has an extra length of leather coiled from the bottom. The cup was produced by L.F. & C. and dated "1918" with "Wm R. Ball all" on the bottom. Interesting fact about the cup and canteen, there is a dent in the bottom of the cup that carries on into the bottom of the canteen, which tells me they have always been a pair, through time.
