Springfield US Model 1888 Trapdoor Rifle .45-70
Serial #504779, .45-70 Govt., 32 1/2" barrel with a very good bore that has some mild freckling and pitting within the grooves. This late model Trapdoor has an overall plum-brown patina with thin surface oxidation present along the barrel, bands, and exposed surfaces. There is some of the original blue remaining on the lockplate, and traces of original blue still present on the protected areas as well. Original oil-quenched color case-hardening is still present on the underside of the breechblock, with mottled freckling on the top surfaces. An original front sight hood is installed, and the rod bayonet has been polished bright, probably for parade purposes. The walnut stock rates very good with numerous small handling marks and surface blemishes scattered throughout. The "SWP / 1890" cartouche and "P" firing proof are still crisp, and there is a "K / 14" rack marking on the comb of the butt. Additionally, a period leather sling is installed. This is a nice looking, unit marked Trapdoor, and is in very good plus condition overall. Antique
