U.S. Model 1904 Hospital Corpsman's Knife (Unit Identified)
This is a handsome knife that measures 17 1/4” overall with an 11 7/8” curved, single-edged blade with rounded tip. The blade has some of the original armory bright polish remaining, with dark areas of freckling and light surface pitting on either side. The ricasso is marked “US/5894” on the obverse, “SA / (flaming bomb) / 1908” on the reverse. The S-curved crossguard has a mild patina with a series of minor handling marks, surface blemishes. The RIA-made, 1910 dated leather scabbard is in good-very good shape with 50-60% of the original blue remaining on the belt swivel, and a very good brown leather body that has light flaking and scuffing, especially along the inside seam on the reverse. The leather has a stamped unit marking on the reverse: “7TH. N.Y. NO. 2”; and a hand scratched marking on the obverse: “H.C. 2 / 7.N.G. N.Y. / W.R.C.” This is a a very nice, unit marked example of a great pre-WW1 US military knife, and would make a fine addition to any collection.
