US Model 1898 Krag .22 Gallery Practice Rifle With Replacement Stevens-Pope Barrel

Serial #477308, .22 LR, 30" barrel with an about good bore that has light-moderate freckling and pitting throughout its length.  This rifle has an original US Model 1898 Gallery Practice Rifle receiver with correct markings, milled right wall, and .22 ejector trip stud on the interior of the left side wall.  The receiver is mated to a commercially produced Stevens – Pope .22 barrel (these were not installed on original .22 Gallery Practice Rifles) that has nearly all of an added blue finish remaining.  The receiver retains about 80-85% of a reapplied blue finish, with some mild flaking along the left side, as well as a smooth plum-brown patina on the right around the magazine door.  The bolt has an overall dull gray patina with some mild freckling on the handle, and traces of original bright fire blue on the extractor.  The stock and handguard have been refinished to fine shape, with some minor handling marks scattered throughout, as well as a short, with-the-grain crack running back from the lower edge of the receiver on the left side.  No cartouche is visible.  Only about 850 Krag .22 Gallery Practice rifles were ever made by Springfield Armory, these were fitted with a Springfield-made barrel with the bore offset to the lower edge of the breech and necessitated the use of an auxiliary extractor that was not required with the Stevens – Pope barrels.  This is a very rare rifle, with period replacement barrel, and would make a great addition to any collection.  FFL or C&R
