US Navy Model 1852 Officer’s Sword by B.B. Abrahams & Co.
This is a very nice sword that measures 35" overall, with a 29 3/4" slightly curved, single-edged blade having single fullers and 2/3 length etched panels on both sides. The blade has an overall bright patina, with only some hints of mild freckling visible along the blade. The ricasso is retailer marked on the obverse, "B.B. / ABRAHAMS / & Co. / PHILA. PA." The hilt fittings retain about 75-80% of the original gilt finish, with the balance turned to a dull yellow-ochre where it’s worn through on the high projections and carry points. The shagreen grip retains most of the original white painted finish, with an intact wire wrap as well. The sword is housed in the original black leather scabbard with brass fittings and is further accompanied by a bullion portepee and lanyard. Benjamin B. Abrahams was a military uniform and goods dealer who formed his company in Philadelphia some time around 1873, and continued operations until at least 1915. This is a later production, 20th century USN sword, and is in very good-fine condition overall.
