WW2 Japanese Army Shin-Gunto Sword with Smith-Made Blade
This is a smith – made sword, measuring 35 1/4" overall, that is marked along the tang, and also has a painted serial number (62). The blade measures 24 1/2" with an o – kissaki tip and a lovely gunome temper line pattern with nie border. The habaki is gilt copper and there are multiple brass seppa. The standard Army cherry blossom tsuba has some of the original gilt finish remaining, and the remainder worn to a mottled ochre-brown patina. The grip has an intact cord wrap and rayskin covering, although the original brass pommel bail has been replaced by a loop of brown nylon cord. The fuchi – kashira are standard Imperial Army issue, and the sword is housed in a khaki colored metal saya with single hanger band and regulation mounts.
