British Snider Mk. II* Conversion of a P-53 Enfield with Unit Markings
NSN, .577 Snider, 36 1/2" barrel with a good bore that has spots of dark freckling and pitting along its length. This was built on an 1858-dated, "ENFIELD" marked P-53 musket that has an overall dark plum-brown patina with some freckling on the lock, and traces of original blue remaining on the receiver and bolt. All markings are still clear and legible. The stock has numerous small handling marks and bruises scattered throughout, with a fairly large gouge on the left side opposite the lock, and what looks like a small burned area on the right side of the forend a few inches back from the forward barrel band. Additionally, there is a large chip forming on the top of the wrist running from the tip of the barrel tang to the rear of the lockplate on the right side. The Enfield arsenal marking on the right side of the buttstock is still clear and legible. The brass furniture has developed a dull ochre patina over time, with unit battalion and stand numbers plainly legible on the buttplate tang: "55 / 287." The original square-tipped ramrod is still present. This is a good looking Snider conversion, in about good condition overall, and would make a nice representative example for a collection. Antique
