Civil War Imported US Model 1860 Cavalry Officer’s Saber by Clauberg

This is a handsome saber that measures 39 3/4" overall with a 34 1/4" curved, single-edged blade with wide and narrow fullers. The blade has a mottled gray patina with small decorative etched panels on the forte: American Eagle with "E PLURIBUS UNUM" riband on the obverse; and "US" on the reverse. The ricasso is marked with the Clauberg Knight trademark on the reverse as well. The brass counterguard and branched knucklebow retain traces of the original gold wash, with the balance tarnished to a darker ochre-brown patina throughout. The shagreen grip has minor surface wear and a mostly intact braided wire wrap that is missing a short length where it meets the guard. The Phrygian helmet pommel matches the patina on the rest of the brass hilt fittings. The saber is housed in the original all-metal scabbard with engraved brass throat, middle band, and chape. The brass has a dark ochre patina throughout, while the blued steel body has tuned to an overall plum-brown color. The drag has been worn through at the very tip. This is a handsome sword that exhibits the patina of use, and would make a great item for display.
