Civil War US Contractor Marked Cap Box
This is a standard US pattern musket cap box with faint, partially legible US Ordnance Department inspection stamp on the exterior of the cover flap. The box is constructed of dark brown bridle leather which has dried over time, but remains fairly flexible. Some flaking and crazing has occurred, mostly on the still intact closure tab, along the flex points, and on the still intact double belt loops. The interior cover is deeply stamped with an oval maker’s stamp: "O.S. WILLIAMS / MAKER / NEW YORK." Orlando S. Williams had a shop at 4 East Broadway, NYC, and received a US Government contract for 5,000 sets of infantry accoutrements on November 9, 1864. The interior fleece lining is no longer present, but an original musket vent pick is still to be found inside the box. This is a very nice looking Civil War cap box, and is in very good-near fine condition.
