Very Rare Civil War H. E. Leman Pennsylvania Militia Rifle

NSN, .58 Caliber, 33" barrel with a fine, bright bore that has some minor freckling within the grooves. This is one of about 500 percussion military rifles made by renowned Kentucky and trade rifle maker H.E. Leman of Lancaster, PA, for a state militia contract during the Civil War. They are similar in design to the US Model 1855 Rifle, but do not have the patchbox, adjustable rear sight, or Maynard tape primer lock of the Springfield-made rifle. This example has a mostly mottled brown patina on the barrel, hammer, and bands, with a slightly grayer patina on the "H. E. LEMAN / LANCASTER Pa." marked lockplate. The walnut stock has numerous small handling marks and blemishes scattered about the old added military oil finish, with some minor chips at the edges of the barrel bands as well. The brass nosecap, trigger guard, and buttplate have a mellow ochre patina throughout, and a correct iron ramrod is included. This is a very rare state contract Civil War percussion rifle, and is in very good-fine condition overall.  Flayderman - 9B-032.  Antique
