Pre-WWI US M1910 Pattern Shovel/Krag Hook Cover 1909/10
This is a very interesting Pre-WWI US M1910 Pattern Shovel/Krag Hook Cover. The shovel is distinctive with a D shaped handle. The unmarked handle is cast with a wooden grip and riveted to the shaft. I have not found a reference for this feature and am not positive if it is a replacement or is experimental. The wooden shaft connecting handle to head bears no markings with signs of heavy use and appears Oak. The blade of the shovel follows the pattern 1910 closely, 8" long by 6 3/4" wide with a total length of 23". The shovel blade has the customary twin wood wedges along the left and right of the shaft. The only labeling on the shovel is a stamped "HARTFORD" found on the front support leg. This is accompanied by a US Army M1910 Early 1st Pattern T-Handle Shovel Cover w/Krag Hook. The canvas is Khaki colored, no rips or tears. The stitching is all intact, no fraying. It has the metal Krag Hook attached to a leather belt adapter marked "ROCK ISLAND ARSENAL 1909 H.E.K. The rear of the Cover is marked "R.I.A 1910 G". The leather handle strap is soft and supple. Some wrinkling and minor surface cracks on the leather. These covers are very RARE and seldom seen offered for sale. Together they make an excellent pair. Please see photo for fine details and condition.
