WWI Era U.S. Military Private Purchase Toiletry Kit Time Capsule
This WWI era officer’s toiletry kit is a remarkably complete and well-preserved collection of personal grooming items, often carried by soldiers abroad. The dark khaki colored trifold canvas case is in very good to excellent condition showing no rips, tears or fraying with one spot of slight discoloration due to staining. This set includes: one Gillette Shaving Kit: The case measures approximately 4 1/8”x1 7/8” and features a patriotic embossed lid, adorned with a spread-winged eagle over a US shield, with military symbols like a crossed sword, rifle, musket, engineer's castle, anchor, signal flag, and caduceus surrounding it. Inside, the lid is lined with dark burgundy felt bearing remnants of the Gillette logo in silver, and the lower compartment contains a gold-finished razor in three pieces, ready to be assembled for use. One Colgate Ribbon Dental Cream: A rare find, this original container includes a pamphlet, with the box showing age-related wear consistent with early 1900s items. One William's Holder Top Shaving Stick: Dating back to around 1919, this shaving stick features a floral pattern and exhibits light signs of long-term storage. One Bakelite Soap Dish with Palmolive Soap: The original bar of unused Palmolive hand soap is safely stored in a period-appropriate black Bakelite dish. One Hall's Zinc Oxide Adhesive Plaster: The small tin is in very good condition, containing plaster for minor wounds. One Willford Hall Absorbent Cotton: A small box with a 1/2-ounce roll of absorbent cotton, though fragile with one missing tab, completes this set. One WWI military issued sewing kit including a thimble, two spools of thread and a needle case that stows neatly inside of the spools. One unused horsehair shaving brush in a cylinder tin which doubles as an extended handle for the brush when screwed together. Finally, we have a 6 3/4” tin cylinder designed to store and protect a toothbrush, featuring perforations at both ends to promote airflow and allow the brush to dry after use. This kit is a fine example of wartime memorabilia.
